National Television and Radio Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan was created in 2002 by Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan «About application of «Law on Television and Radio broadcasting». In Azerbaijan «Law on Television and Radio broadcasting» was adopted in 2002 after positive testimonial of the experts of Council of Europe.
Main purpose of National Television and Radio Council is regulation in sphere of television and radio broadcasting, protection of independence of broadcasters and interests of the public, implementation of execution the «Law on Television and Radio broadcasting». Council consists of 9 members appointed by the president. At present there are 7 members of council. Members of Council have the right to be appointed repeatedly. National Television and Radio Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan is financed from the state budget. Members of Council are completely independent in their activities and any authorities or any official cannot give the instructions and directions to the members of Council.
At present there are 8 national and 12 regional television broadcasters, 12 radio broadcasters and 13 cable television broadcasters in Azerbaijan, also 1 satellite television broadcaster .
